Rain, Wind, or Shine?

Something that will forever be out of our control - the weather. We can plan ahead for so many other things on the big day, but the weather forecast may have other ideas. We are here to help provide you with some options on how to navigate this when the rain clouds are looming on the morning of your perfect day.

1. Don’t get caught up on your seasonal expectations

We see this a lot with our couples when discussing their dates. They have chosen their date to be in late summer or early autumn, hoping for a sunshine-filled day. Although it is wonderful to be excited about the season and time of year you have chosen, we often remind our couples not to let their seasonal expectations stop them from considering a plan B. As mentioned, these things are out of our control.

2. Choose a venue that has a beautiful indoor option as a backup

Something to keep in mind when viewing your dream venues is to check out their indoor options. This is an important tip for couples looking in the summertime, as often this can be put on the back burner with the expectation of good weather on the day. Don’t be afraid to ask the venue manager about what will be possible for a backup on the day and how much flexibility there is. Ensure that even though it may not be as picture-perfect as the outdoor option, you still really love the indoor option.

3. Embrace how the day unfolds

Mindset can play a big role on your wedding day. We often say as florists to embrace what Mother Nature brings you. We love hearing stories of our couples who fully embraced the torrential rain on the day. What stood out about these couples was their attitude - they laughed, had an open mindset, and didn’t let it ruin their day. Of course, this is easier said than done, so we suggest focusing on what cold and wet days can mean in a new way. Embrace the coziness and romance of it all. Adorn the whole room with candles (who doesn’t love a room filled with magical candles?!), let the flowers fill the inside space with beauty, and lean into the atmosphere celebrating with your loved ones.

4. Avoid the last-minute scramble

Our biggest tip as professionals who work in the event industry is to avoid a last-minute scramble. Too many times we have seen couples make the call just before walking down the aisle to change to an indoor venue. This can often add a lot of stress to your day and take away from the enjoyment of the morning of getting ready. You may be constantly thinking, ‘Do I change it?' or 'Will the weather hold off?’ By making an early call, you can be at peace with your decision and enjoy the whole process of getting ready without worry about the ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’. Another reason to avoid the last-minute scramble is the loss of expertise and finesse in your ceremony setup. Florists spend time, quality, and care to create your backdrop to perfection. If you choose a last-minute change of plans, your florists or other designers will have already left the venue, leaving people without expertise to move and change the setup. This may leave you feeling that it has been remade with a ‘that will do’ attitude in order to rush it all inside in time. Let that worry be free from your mind as you can update your florists and other vendors in the morning so they can bring their magic to whichever space, without you needing to be concerned about moving it.

5. Remember, extreme heat is also a weather concern

We always love to give a heads-up to couples that extreme heat can be just as brutal as standing outside in the pouring rain. Remember that elderly people and people with health conditions may seriously be at risk standing in 40 degrees for a few hours. It may be blissful and beautiful relief to be married in the cool air-conditioned space that allows people to feel comfortable and relaxed if your wedding day is forecasted for a heatwave.

Remember that whatever the day brings, it is still going to be a magnificent day regardless of the forecast. Hopefully, these tips give you some ideas of what a plan B might be for you and bring a sense of calm knowing there is always a way to work everything out. If you are stressed about what an indoor wedding would look like, we are always here to help bring beautiful ideas and suggest innovative options.
